Mariah Carey says pushback over 'Butterfly' was caused by “a confusion over what box to put me in
Mariah Carey opened up about the flack she received from the music industry when she came out with Butterfly, her sixth studio album.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the Grammy vented her frustration about being belittled and doubted by “the corporate morgue, the entities that run things.”
Mariah began working on Butterfly amid her divorce from Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola and knew she wanted her music to embrace her heritage. That meant exploring hip-hop and R&B, but her label wanted her to continue her career in “purely pop records.”
“Hip hop existed long before these guys, who were in control of the record business, knew of it or knew about it. They thought it was a trend or a passing fad,” she quipped. “They thought they knew better.”
The singer believes the pushback arose from “a confusion over what box to put me in” because she was mixed race. She also felt her label feared her music would become “too urban.”
“It wasn’t anyone’s favorite thing that I wanted to do hip hop-ish records,” she continued. “…People did not believe in it, or believe in me in that genre and that moment.”
Butterfly went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide and was nominated for three Grammy Awards. The making of this album will be explored in the upcoming documentary series about her life, directed by Lee Daniels.
Mariah celebrated Butterfly‘s 25th anniversary on Friday, writing on Instagram, “I will never forget the day I released this album to the world. I had never felt more exposed and vulnerable yet free and euphoric at the same time.”
She called the album “one of the proudest moments of my life.”
Mariah unleashed a bunch of Butterfly-related anniversary goodies, which are available on her official online store.

David Beckham stands in queue to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II
(LONDON) — David Beckham joined the miles-long queue Friday to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II.
The soccer legend joined the hundred of thousands of people waiting in line for hours to pay respects to the monarch, who is currently lying in state at Westminster Hall ahead of her state funeral on Monday.
“I grew up in a household of royalists and I was brought up that way,” Beckham told ITV News from the queue. “If my grandparents would have been here today I know that they would have wanted to be here, so I am here on their behalf and on behalf of my family.”
The former Manchester United star is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, with whom he shares four children, sons Brooklyn, 23; Romeo, 20; and Cruz, 17; as well as daughter Harper, 11.
“It’s a sad day, but it’s a day for us to remember the incredible legacy that she left,” he said of the queen, adding that “Her Majesty meant so much in so many different ways.”
Beckham said he was “lucky to have a few moments” with the queen throughout his life and career, noting that the “most special moment” for him was receiving his Officer of the Order of the British Empire distinction, or OBE, which was bestowed on him by Elizabeth herself in 2003.
Elizabeth died Sept. 8 at age 96 and is the longest-reigning British monarch, having held the throne for 70 years.
The late queen’s eldest son King Charles III has since inherited the throne.

Chrissy Teigen says pregnancy loss from two years ago was an abortion: “Let's call it what it was
Chrissy Teigen is opening up about the pregnancy loss she suffered two years ago, now calling it an abortion.
“Two years ago, when I was pregnant with Jack, John [Legend] and my third child, I had to make a lot of difficult and heartbreaking decisions. It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive, and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention,” Teigen explained while speaking at social impact agency Propper Daley’s “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit Thursday, per Entertainment Tonight.
“Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion,” Teigen author continued. “An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago.”
Teigen elaborated that it took the overturning of Roe v. Wade for her to come to the realization of what had actually happened, and explained that Legend was the one who initially brought it to her attention.
“I fell silent, feeling weird that I hadn’t made sense of it that way,” the model recalled. “I told the world we had a miscarriage, the world agreed we had a miscarriage, all the headlines said it was a miscarriage. And I became really frustrated that I didn’t, in the first place, say what it was, and I felt silly that it had taken me over a year to actually understand that we had had an abortion.”
The admission comes a month after Teigen, 36, and Legend, 43, revealed they are currently expecting their fourth child. The pair are already parents to six-year-old daughter Luna and four-year-old son Miles.

Ciara has one goal for her new album: “I want to make the world dance”
It’s been three years since Ciara released her last album, Beauty Marks, and now the Grammy winner is happy to say album #8 is complete. Ciara has always been known for her dazzling choreography, and she wants her music to inspire great moves for her fans.
“The world can never have enough joy, the world can ever never have enough love and the world can definitely never have enough dance,” Ciara says in the Ebony September/October cover story. “There’s so much energy in this album because I want to make the world dance. That’s always been my thing,” the 36-year-old entertainer continues. “It’s the tempo and beat I’ve been moving to in my music, and the key sentiments I’ve poured into this album.”
In July, Ciara released “Jump,” her first new single in two years. It is expected to be on her new album, which does not yet have a release date.
“There is an R&B core in these records. To be honest, this album feels nostalgic,” she says. “It takes me back to my first album in a way that no project I’ve done to this point has before.”
Ciara recorded her new project during the COVID-19 pandemic. She says that the global spread of the virus has forced her, and so many people, to become more resourceful.
“I think one of the greatest things that came out of the pandemic is realizing we’re all much stronger than we thought we were,” Ciara says, “and we’re all trying to find ways to thrive.
