Authorities say Bondi Beach mass shooting was inspired by ISIS

shutterstock_2714428803-1388390-150x150431616-1

Australian authorities say the father and son accused of carrying out a deadly antisemitic attack during a Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach were motivated by Islamic State ideology and had recently traveled to the Philippines, a region known for past extremist activity.

Officials described the assault as a terrorist attack aimed at maximizing casualties among civilians. Fifteen people were killed and more than 40 wounded in Sunday’s shooting, including a 10-year-old girl and an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor. The attackers were identified as a 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, who was fatally shot by police at the scene, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, who remains hospitalized after being wounded during the confrontation. Police said the firearms used were legally owned by the elder Akram.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Tuesday investigators have found clear indicators of extremist influence. “It would appear that there is evidence that this was inspired by a terrorist organization, by ISIS” Albanese told reporters. Australia’s federal police commissioner, Krissy Barrett, echoed that assessment, calling the incident “a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State.” Authorities said homemade ISIS flags and improvised explosive devices were discovered inside a vehicle linked to the suspects.

Investigators confirmed the two men traveled to the Philippines from Nov. 1 to Nov. 28, with immigration records listing Davao as their final destination. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said authorities are examining where the men went and what they did during the trip. Australian media, citing security sources, reported the suspects may have received “military-style training,” though Philippine officials said there is no current evidence of foreign militants operating in the country’s south.

Indian police confirmed Sajid Akram was originally from Hyderabad, where he earned a degree before migrating to Australia in 1998. He held an Indian passport, while his children were born in Australia and are citizens. Indian authorities said Akram had limited contact with relatives in India and that family members “expressed no knowledge of his radical mindset or activities, nor of the circumstances that led to his radicalization.” Police added his son’s radicalization appeared to have no connection to India.

Australian officials acknowledged that Naveed Akram had been investigated in 2019 for possible links to a Sydney-based extremist network, but intelligence agencies later determined he posed no threat at the time. ABC News reported he had associations with individuals tied to pro-ISIS activity, though lawyers for one of those figures denied any involvement in the Bondi Beach attack.

Albanese and state leaders pledged to further tighten Australia’s already strict gun laws, noting that the elder suspect legally possessed multiple firearms. “The suspected murderers, callous in how they allegedly coordinated their attack, appeared to have no regard for the age or ableness of their victims.”

Israeli officials sharply criticized Australia’s government, pointing to a rise in antisemitic incidents. Israeli Ambassador Amir Maimon warned that Jewish Australians no longer feel safe and urged stronger action, saying, “We are now facing here a surge of antisemitism, and Australians of Jewish faith are not feeling secure in their own country, and this is insane.”

New York Jets release wide receiver Allen Lazard after three seasons

shutterstock_2347892719-1437252-150x150765461-1

The New York Jets have released wide receiver Allen Lazard after three seasons.  Lazard, 30, was released Tuesday after requesting his exit, a move that allows him to pursue an opportunity with a contending team with three games remaining in the regular season. If Lazard is claimed off waivers, the acquiring team would be responsible for the final three weeks of his 2025 base salary, totaling $291,667.

Lazard had signed a four-year, $44 million deal ahead of the 2023 season, a move that reunited him with former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The pairing showed promise during training camp, but the connection stalled when Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury early that year. Lazard finished his first season in New York with 23 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown in 14 games. He was more productive the following season with Rodgers back under center, posting 37 receptions for 530 yards and six scores in 12 games.

This season Lazard’s role diminished, appearing in just 10 games, making two starts, and recorded just 10 catches for 70 yards and one touchdown. He was a healthy scratch for four games and reworked his contract in April after the Jets released Rodgers. Over three seasons with New York, Lazard totaled 70 receptions for 911 yards and eight touchdowns across 36 appearances.

An undrafted free agent out of Iowa State, Lazard originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018 before joining Green Bay later that year. He spent five seasons with the Packers, where he set career highs with 60 catches and 788 yards in 2022 and scored a personal-best eight touchdowns in 2021. Across stints with the Packers and Jets, he has compiled 239 receptions for 3,147 yards and 28 touchdowns in 93 career games.

In additional roster moves Tuesday, the Jets released quarterback Adrian Martinez and signed linebacker Ochaun Mathis to the practice squad.  Looking ahead, Adonai Mitchell, John Metchie III and Isaiah Williams are expected to serve as the Jets’ top wide receivers in Week 16 against the New Orleans Saints.

New York (3-11) will face New Orleans (4-10) on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST at Caesars Superdome.

QB Arch Manning returning to Texas for the 2026 season, will not enter NFL draft

shutterstock_2700467071-1194543-150x15084627-1

Arch Manning has decided to return to Texas for the 2026 season, opting for another year with the Longhorns rather than entering the NFL draft.

Manning’s father, Cooper, confirmed the decision to ESPN, saying, “Arch is playing football at Texas next year.” The move ends months of speculation surrounding the redshirt junior, who was eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft and widely viewed by scouts as a potential early first-round pick.

The 6-foot-4 quarterback just completed his first full regular season as a starter, leading Texas to a 9-3 record and narrowly missing the College Football Playoff. He capped the year with a statement win over then-unbeaten Texas A&M, completing six of his final seven passes for 128 yards and sealing the game with a decisive touchdown run. It marked his third victory against a top-10 opponent.

Manning will continue his development in Austin, following a path similar to that of his uncles Peyton and Eli Manning and his grandfather Archie, all of whom stayed in college to gain experience before turning pro. With only 14 career starts, another season provides Manning additional game reps and film against elite SEC competition. Looking ahead, Manning is widely projected as a first-round prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft and could position himself near the top of that class with a strong 2026 campaign.

Manning finished the regular season 227-of-370 passing for 2,942 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while adding 244 rushing yards and eight scores. He threw only two interceptions over his final seven games and showed steady growth after early inconsistency, emerging as one of the SEC’s most productive quarterbacks down the stretch.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said earlier this week that another year could be valuable for Manning’s long-term future: “He’s a young man who’s gotten better as the season’s gone on, and not only physically, but mentally, maturity-wise. I would think he’s going to want another year of that growth to put himself in position for hopefully a long career in the NFL. And he’s got some unfinished business of what he came here to do and what he came here to accomplish … We had a really good football season. We left some meat on the bone with an opportunity to be SEC champs, national champs, and so ultimately for him, I think the competitor in him is going to say, ‘Man, I sure would like another crack at trying to do those things.’”

Texas will close the 2025 season against Michigan in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31 in Orlando.

Nick Reiner to be charged with first-degree murder for killing of parents Rob and Michele Reiner

shutterstock_1367061479-1210916-150x150808548-1

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell announced during a press conference on Tuesday that Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances for the killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who were found dead in their home over the weekend.

Hochman said at the news conference alongside McDonnell that “their loss is beyond tragic and we will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice,” adding that this type of case is “the most serious charge the DA’s office can bring against anyone.” The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, Hochman said, with the DA adding that “no decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty.” Hochman said Riener also faces a special allegation that he used a knife in the killings; sources familiar with the case sharing that the couple were found with multiple stab wounds.

Reiner, 32, was not medically cleared to appear in court on Tuesday, according his attorney, Alan Jackson.  Jackson confirmed to reporters outside Los Angeles Superior Court that he was representing Reiner, and that his client would not be making his first court appearance Tuesday because he hadn’t been medically cleared. Reiner is being held without bail at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. “Hopefully he’ll be cleared tomorrow and we can get him here,” Jackson said, though he would not specify what medical issue prevented Reiner from being cleared, only saying it was “procedural.”

Nick Reiner had been living on his parents’ property in a guest house separate from the main structure, but was not at home when his parents’ bodies were discovered. Law enforcement sources told ABC News that he was found in Exposition Park near the University of Southern California on Sunday night thanks to “good, solid police work” and was taken into custody. Los Angeles Police Department Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said at the department’s weekly commission meeting on Tuesday that the Reiners were found dead in the master bedroom of their Brentwood home by their daughter, Romy Reiner. Choi did not give any additional new insights into their deaths.

Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, is a partner at the firm Werksman Jackson & Quinn LLP. He has previously represented Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Karen Read, among others, in their high-profile cases. He helped secure an acquittal for Read, who had been charged with murdering her police officer boyfriend in Massachusetts. Jackson represented Spacey in his Massachusetts groping case, which was dismissed when the actor’s accuser dropped their civil complaint; and he was also on the team that defended Weinstein in his California criminal trial. In addition, Jackson successfully prosecuted record producer Phil Spector for murdering actress Lana Clarkson.

Nick has a history of battling addiction and he had spoken publicly about his struggles, which reportedly began when he was a teenager. He has said that he has been in and out of addiction treatment facilities, and spent time homeless and living on the streets. Nick co-wrote – and Rob Reiner directed – the 2016 film ‘Being Charlie’ about the struggles of an addicted son and a famous father. While it was not autobiographical, the film included several elements of their lives.  Just three months ago, Nick was photographed with his parents and siblings at the premiere of his father’s film “Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues.”

New details about the events leading up to the incident have also been revealed. The night before the killings (Saturday, December 13) Nick and his parents attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, where he was seen being disruptive; with sources stating that Rob and Nick had a “brief but loud” argument.

Authorities share new photos, videos of person of interest as manhunt for Brown University shooter enters third day

shutterstock_2405918435-2982917-150x150599767-1

Authorities are continuing the manhunt for the gunman in the deadly shooting at Brown University, while investigators disclosed that a previously detained person of interest has been released and the case has shifted direction. Two students were killed and nine others wounded Saturday afternoon when gunfire erupted inside an engineering building during final exams.

On Monday afternoon, Providence Police shared new videos and photos on social media of a new person of interest in the shooting, which show a man dressed in black on Hope and Manning streets and on Benevolent Street. Police state that the images were captured about two hours before Saturday’s shooting: “we are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in Saturday’s incident at Brown University. Please share these images and direct all tips to 401-272-3121 or at the link HERE. “

Previously released surveillance video shows a suspect dressed in black calmly walking away from the scene. The individual’s face is not visible, and officials have not determined whether the suspect is affiliated with the university. Investigators are also still working to determine how the shooter accessed the first-floor classroom. While the building’s exterior doors were unlocked, rooms used for final exams required badge access.

Providence Police Chief, Col. Oscar L. Perez Jr., said at the news conference that “It’s all hands on deck,” adding that state police and federal agencies are also assisting in the search. Authorities asked people in Rhode Island and beyond to review the new videos and photos and to call police if they have any information.

The FBI announced that they were “offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individual. Anyone with information please contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) or the Providence Police Department at 401-272-3121.”  The FBI also released a description of the suspect, saying the person is “approximately 5’8” with a stocky build.”

Meanwhile, the person of interest that had been taken into custody early Sunday was released later that night after investigators determined there was no legal basis to continue holding them. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said evidence that had initially drawn attention to the individual “now points in a different direction … So what that means is that this person of interest needs to be released.”

Brown University posted on X: “Providence police announced late on Sunday night that they have released the individual they had detained in connection with the investigation into the shooting on the Brown campus on Saturday, Dec. 14, which claimed the lives of two Brown students and injured nine others. The Rhode Island Attorney General stated definitively in a news media event hosted by the City of Providence that “there is no basis” to consider the released individual a person of interest. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate, and local police have advised they do not believe there is any immediate threat to Brown or the local community. We continue to make every effort to ensure the safety and security of the campus. We are also advising every member of the Brown community to be vigilant in their own activities on campus”

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley shared that seven hospitalized victims remain in stable condition, one is in critical condition, and another with minor injuries has been released. He said he has spoken directly with several victims, and added that “this is an incredibly upsetting and emotional time for Providence and Brown — for all of us.”

Brown has canceled all remaining classes and exams for the semester, allowing students to leave campus if they choose. Support services remain available for those who stay, Provost Francis Doyle said: “At this time, it is essential that we focus our efforts on providing care and support to the members of our community as we grapple with the sorrow, fear and anxiety that is impacting all of us right now.”

The two students killed were identified as Muhammad Aziz Umurzakov of Uzbekistan and Ella Cook of Birmingham, Alabama. The Uzbekistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, “The loss of innocent lives as a result of this tragedy is a heavy loss for all of us.”  Cook was vice president of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans, with her church in Alabama describing her as an “incredible light.” Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said on X: “I am heartbroken to hear that Mountain Brook’s Ella Cook was among those killed over the weekend at Brown University. Our hearts and our prayers are with the Cook family and everyone impacted by this senseless killing.” In addition, Rep. Katie Britt, R-Ala., said on X: “There are no words that can ease the pain Ella’s family and friends are enduring right now. … Our hearts are breaking for the Cook family.”

Nick Reiner, son of Rob and Michelle Reiner, arrested on suspicion of murder in their deaths

shutterstock_2373675361-1442877-150x150951543-1

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that Nick Reiner, the younger son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, is being held on suspicion of murder following their deaths.

Reiner, 32, was as booked at the LAPD jail and was originally being held on $4 million bail; however an update later in the day from the LAPD said he was being held without bail. At a press conference on Monday morning, LAPD Chief McDonnell confirmed that Nick Reiner had been “booked for murder.. a very, very tragic incident.”  Police arrested Nick Reiner on Sunday for the stabbing deaths of his parents, online records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department indicated. The arrest came just hours after the Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the Reiner home around 3:30 p.m. PST Sunday after a family member discovered the couple, who were found dead from multiple stab wounds. Sources told ABC News that it was the Reiners’ daughter Romy who found her parents’ bodies on Sunday.

Nick Reiner, 32, has a long history with drug addiction, beginning his teens. In an interview with People in 2016, Nick shared that he spent weeks homeless and was in and out of rehab for addiction treatment that began when he was 15. Reiner’s struggles with addiction led him to co-write the 2016 film “Being Charlie,” directed by Rob Reiner and featuring actor Cary Elwes (who appeared in Reiner’s classic “The Princess Bride.”). The plot focuses on a young man struggling with addiction who has been in and out of rehab.

The Reiner family said in a statement after news broke of the couple’s death: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

Rob Reiner, the son of director/comedian Carl Reiner, was first know for his role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic, on the CBS sitcom ‘All in the Family,’ where he won Emmys as best supporting actor in a comedy in 1974 and 1978. Reiner went on to become an acclaimed director, with some of his most notable work including “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “A Few Good Men,” “Misery,” and “When Harry Met Sally…”.

Rob and Michele met when Rob directed When Harry Met Sally… , and the couple married in 1989. They are survived by two other children, son Jake Reiner and daughter Romy. Rob Reiner also adopted his daughter, Tracy Reiner, during his marriage to late actress/director Penny Marshall.
