How Serena Williams learned to love her body, stop comparing herself to Venus

Theo Wargo/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — In one of her most candid interviews yet, Serena Williams opens up about her formative years and trying to emulate her older sister, Venus.

Williams, 37, has inspired so many on and off the tennis court. In a new interview for GQ magazine’s Woman of the Year issue, she reveals how she was able to become comfortable in her own skin.

After telling the magazine just how close she is to Venus, 38, she admits that at a young age she really wanted to emulate her older sister.

“I was not myself. I was Venus. Just…Seren-us,” the now tennis icon said. “I identified as Venus. I felt weird, like, my boobs were bigger than Venus’, and my body was thicker. I was curvier. I was like, ‘Why am I not Venus?’ And she was tired of me copying her. She was like, ‘Get your own identity, please!'”

She said she finally accepted that she “looked different. And I played different. And I hit different. And I ran different.”

Williams’ half sister, Yetunde (who died in 2003), helped her gain her famed body confidence, as well as become the champion she is today, on her own terms.

“I was really struggling, and she’s like, ‘You know, everyone is different. You’re not Venus, and you’re never going to be Venus. You’re never going to be as thin as her, and that’s OK. And you’re never going to be as tall as her, and that’s OK. Nothing is wrong with that. You have a beautiful body on your own. You have a beautiful face,'” she explained to the magazine.

Williams said that advice really helped her move on.

“It was good that she taught me that lesson, because in a way she was teaching me a lesson about life,” she added. “In a way, it had nothing to do with Venus. It wasn’t about her at all. Tennis players in general didn’t look like me. Especially the top players or anyone that ever won Grand Slams. Nothing like me. So it was, Can I win looking like this? Can I perform looking like this? And that was something that I realized that I could do. I just had to learn that it was okay to, you know, not be Venus.”

In the powerful interview, Williams also opens up about being a mom and how happy she is with her 1-year-old daughter Olympia.

“And I’m a full-time mom. I’m a very hands-on mom,” she said.

She continued, “We do everything together. I love everything about being a mom. The only thing I don’t love about being a mom is come 7:30, Olympia’s in bed and I get sad. I’m like, ‘Should I go to bed?’ Because then if I wake up, I get to see her again.”

Houston Rockets ‘parting ways’ with Carmelo Anthony

Allen Kee / ESPN Images(HOUSTON) — Carmelo Anthony’s time with the Houston Rockets is officially over.

The team announced on Thursday that it will be “parting ways” with the power forward.

Anthony, 34, joined the Rockets this past summer and played just 10 games with Houston this season before the team moved off of him.

“After much internal discussion, the Rockets will be parting ways with Carmelo Anthony and we are working toward a resolution,” Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey said in a statement. “Carmelo had a tremendous approach during his time with the Rockets and accepted every role head coach Mike D’Antoni gave him.”

“The fit we envisioned when Carmelo chose to sign with the Rockets has not materialized, therefore we thought it was best to move on as any other outcome would have been unfair to him,” Morey added.

Houston doesn’t plan to immediately waive Anthony, sources tell ESPN, and will allow his representatives to continue exploring where the 10-time All-Star will end up.

Anthony won’t be eligible for a trade until after Dec. 15 since he signed with the Rockets as a free agent.

Pharrell on Kanye West’s controversial opinions: “We have to love our brother, regardless.”

Lars Niki/Corbis via Getty Images Pharrell Williams and Kanye West have collaborated on numerous songs, and as Kanye faces a backlash for his controversial opinions, Pharrell is not abandoning his long-time friend.

“We have to love our brother, regardless. We might not agree with him, but we can’t stand by and watch anything happen to him, because he’s our brother,” the 11-time Grammy winner tells Complex.com.

“We don’t want to abandon him because we fundamentally disagree,” he continues. “We care about his well-being. We care about the spirit that is him.”

Kanye is often under fire because he supports President Trump.  But while Pharrell doesn’t share Ye’s political views, he says it’s important to respect the man he considers family.

“I’m not siding with him at all, [but] at the end of the day, you gotta understand that, even when there is division, we’re still one,” Pharrell explains.

Pharrell believes that just like the black community always stood by the late, great Muhammad Ali, it should also respect Kanye, and not treat him like an enemy.

“We wouldn’t have let that happen to [Ali], even if he wouldn’t have decided to go the other way. We would have stuck by him,” Pharrell insists. “You know what I’m saying? That’s our brother.”

DeWayne Rogers/Monami EntertainmentIn the new season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi Burruss‘ bumpy relationship with Porsha Williams seems to be on the mend after their explosive fallout on the RHOA season nine reunion.

However, while the Xscape singer is willing to give Williams another chance, Burruss says her friendship with Phaedra Parks is definitely over.

“Absolutely not. Absolutely not. That was too far. That was too much,” Burruss told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live after he asked if she and Parks could mend their relationship.

“I’ve never heard anything [from her]. No apologies, no nothing,” Kandi said. “And I’m cool with that. We don’t ever have to talk again, and I’m good. Let’s move forward.”

As previously reported, on the season nine reunion of RHOA, Parks admitted starting rumors that Burruss wanted to drug Williams and take advantage of her sexually — a rumor Williams repeated multiple times throughout the season. Following the explosive reunion, Parks was let go from the show, with Burruss and Williams attempting to reconcile their relationship.
