Teen hockey player returns to the ice after suffering traumatic brain injury in accident: 'I feel great'

ABC News(BOSTON) — Since he was a young boy, Gage Senter has loved hockey.

Three years ago, Senter was a high school freshman in Merrimac, Massachusetts, when he made the varsity starting lineup as a center.

“It was the most important thing for me. I just worried about hockey and I just worried about the game,” said Senter, now 18. “I didn’t worry about anything else.”

He had dreams of playing hockey professionally but that summer, when he was 15, he was struck by a car at a crosswalk.

He spent a month in a coma and was on life support for six weeks with a traumatic brain injury and remained in the hospital for nine months.

When Senter woke up, he said, he thought his life was over, but it wasn’t.

“My life was very different. … I just had to relearn how to walk. Relearn how to talk. Relearn how to eat. Relearn how to live life again. Relearn to learn of who I was again. I did it and I pulled through. … I just never gave up,” he said.

Senter worked hard in rehabilitation for 22 months, determined to recover and to return to the ice.

Stacey Sirotta, Senter’s physical therapist, said it had been “exciting” to see Senter’s progress.

In March, seven months ago, he took his first shaky steps back on the ice. For Senter and his family, it was a victory. And, it didn’t take him long to get back to his old form.

Sirotta said he was doing a great job mastering different aspects of skating.

“It takes a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of determination. … He continues to get better and better,” she said.

“I just love the feeling on my face,” Senter told ABC News. “I just love that cool breeze. I love skating fast. I love taking tight turns.”

Senter also became a role model at the May Center School for Brain Injury in Brockton, Massachusetts, for other young people with serious brain injuries.

“I help them just like I was helped,” Senter said. “I want my fellow students to get back to how they were before they got the brain injury.”

As for skating, he said, getting back on the ice and playing hockey helped him feel like his old self, “but with the little lags.”

“I feel great. I feel greater than ever to be back in this world,” he said. “I feel like everything is not how I would like it to be but I’m working and I’m making progress every single day and that’s what I have to say for everyone with an injury. … You can’t give up. Just keep trying.”

Tune in tonight: R. Kelly's ex-wife Andrea Kelly opens upon on ABC's “Nightline”

Paras Griffin/Getty ImagesFollowing the revelation that she was abused for years by her ex-husband R. KellyAndrea Kelly is now opening up to ABC News’ Linsey Davis on tonight’s edition of Nightline about her tumultuous relationship with the singer — including the moment when she realized she was a victim of domestic violence.

Andrea says that after a series of altercations between her and Kelly, she reached a breaking point in which she almost tried to end her life.

“The only thing that kept me…first God, but my kids. ‘Cause I remember I climbed out on the balcony and I looked down and it was, like, God had helped me to see my body was layin’ in blood,” she said. “Then in the background I hear my kids go, ‘Mama. Mama. Why did Mama jump? Why did she leave us?'”

During her vision, Kelly says she remembers being told to “get [her] laptop… and type in domestic violence.”

“I go to their web page and there’s a survey,” she continues. “I take the survey, and of the 17 things on the list, Robert had already done 15. And it just dawned, I was like, ‘Wait.'”

She said before that moment, she had not considered herself a victim of domestic violence.

“And the more I said yes, the more I would replay things in my mind. The things he’s done,” she added. “The things he’s said. The sexual abuse. The physical abuse. The emotional abuse. The financial abuse. And I was like, ‘No. This is you. You’re that girl.'”

R. Kelly and Andrea married in 1996, and divorced in 2009. They have three children.

Dallas Austin reveals “Drumline” movie was about his romance with Kim Porter

Prince Williams/WireImageAs the hip hop community continues to mourn the loss of model-actress Kim Porter, music producer Dallas Austin has shared some details about their past relationship.

Posting a throwback prom photo of himself and Porter, Austin shared some touching memories about his childhood friend on Instagram.

“This is the hardest post I’ve ever had to do…my mom and Kim’s mom was pregnant with us at the same time in Columbus,” he captioned the image.

“I have never known a life without Kim Porter from kindergarten through all of our life long experiences in high school, having matching BMWs or her being the biggest believer in me making it as a producer and us getting out of Columbus to be somebody…and we made it!!”

After saying they were “inseparable” growing up, Austin went on to reveal that his 2002 collegiate film Drumline, starring Nick Cannon and Zoe Saldana, was based on their real-life romance.

“Most people don’t know that Zoe Saldana played the role of Kim in Drumline as nick cannon played my character,” he continued. “We saw purple rain 15times in the theater and if you knew her you knew a strong beautiful smiling gangster angel ! I know GOD is perfect but sometimes even perfect can make a mistake.”

As previously noted, a coroner is scheduled to perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death for Porter.

According to TMZ, law enforcement officers said that Porter wasn’t feeling well the night before she passed, and when family members went to wake her on Thursday, she was non-responsive. When paramedics arrived they pronounced she had passed away.

Porter was suffering from flu-like symptoms, and was being treated with saline and vitamins.

Ella Mai was shocked to discover that Chris Brown is a fan: “He was telling me how much he loved my music

10 Summers/Interscope RecordsChris Brown has always been one of Ella Mai’s favorites, and when they recorded the song “Whatchamacallit” for her debut album, she was shocked to discover that he was also a fan of her music.

“Working with Chris Brown was very weird and surreal to me because I’m a huge Chris Brown fan,” the singer from London tells ABC Radio. “I have been since I was like 11-years-old. So I’ve always said it in my head, like ‘Oh, I’m gonna work with Chris Brown one day.’ But, when its right in front of you, it’s like OK. Wow.”

Mai credits the “Back to Sleep” singer for helping to promote her breakthrough single, “Boo’d Up,” before it became a hit.

“It was a little bit unexpected because Chris Brown was listening to my song ‘Boo’d Up’ on his Instagram story like a couple of months before we worked in the studio together,” she remembers. “He showed that he liked my music which is not how I pictured it because I was like that doesn’t make sense. It’s like I’m supposed to be the one that likes your music.”

After growing up in London, Mai attended high school in New York City. She was such a big fan of Brown that she left school early one day to go to the BET studio in Manhattan and see him on 106 and Park.

“It was amazing working with him,” the 24-year-old singer says. “He was super laid back and telling me how much he loved my music. I told him one day I cut school and went to 106 and Park.”

Mai is featured on the Creed II soundtrack, and she will perform Thursday on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
