Georgia Tech to introduce Temple's Geoff Collins as next head football coach
Photo by Joe Faraoni / ESPN Images(ATLANTA) — Just over a week after Georgia Tech head football coach Paul Johnson announced he would retire from that job at the end of the season, the Yellow Jackets have named Temple University’s Geoff Collins their next head coach.
Collins led Temple to a 15-10 record and two bowl appearances in his two-year tenure. No coach in Temple history won as many games in his first two seasons at the school.
Collins is from the Atlanta area, and has had two stints on the Georgia Tech coaching staff. Prior to his time at Temple, he also served as a defensive coordinator at the University of Florida, Mississippi State University, Florida International University and Western Carolina University.

Former MLB players confirmed dead in car crash
Photozek07/iStock(CARACAS, Venezuela) — Venezuelan baseball team, Cardenales de Lara, has confirmed the deaths of Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo, both former Major League Baseball players.
Valbuena, 33, and Castillo, 37, were on the current Cardenales de Lara roster and crashed after playing in a Venezuelan Professional Baseball League game at University Stadium in Caracas Thursday night, ESPN reports. The two baseball players were traveling to Barquisimeto for a Friday game against Bravos de Margarita, when their vehicle went to the opposite side of the road during an attempt to avoid sliding rock, authorities said.
During his 11 MLB years, Valbuena played for the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros. He spent his final two MLB seasons with the Los Angeles Angels before that team released him in August, ESPN reports.
Castillo divided his four years with MLB playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and the Astros before leaving the league in 2008.

Ella Mai says Grammy nominations are like the cherry on top” of an “amazing year
ABC/Image Group LAElla Mai has always dreamed of winning a Grammy, and that dream may now come true. She was nominated for two awards today: Song of the Year, and Best R&B Song, for “Boo’d Up.”
The 24-year-old singer heard the news announced by Michael Strahan as she appeared on Good Morning America in New York City.
“I really didn’t know before I got on stage. So when Michael said it, I was like, What? I didn’t know what to say,” Mai tells ABC Radio. “I’m just super, super grateful. The Grammys is something that, as any musician or artist, we look up to it from when we’re little and we dream of being nominated. So I’m just so grateful and I’ve had an amazing year, so this is like the cherry on top.”
Mai says even after hearing the news, it didn’t immediately register that her mutti-platinum single, “Boo’d Up,” had been recognized as one of the best of the year.
“I don’t think it’s actually hit me yet. It will,” she says. “I know it will sometime soon. Probably before the day. But yeah, it’s crazy.”
Mai lives in Los Angeles but was born in London, where her mom still lives. Nauturally, when she was informed about the nominations, Ella couldn’t wait to inform her mother.
“My mom’s at work so I’m not even sure if she knows yet. So I’m going to call her,” Mai says. “I have to try to figure out the time difference ’cause she’s still in England.”
Tune in to see if Ella’s Grammy dream comes true when the Grammy Awards air live from Los Angeles’ Staples Center Sunday, February 10, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

SZA, Janelle Monae honored at “Billboard”'s Women In Music event; Alicia Keys announces new initiative
(Janelle Monae; Tierra Whack) Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for BillboardSZA and Janelle Monae were honored Thursday night in New York City at Billboard‘s annual Women in Music Awards, while Alicia Keys announced a new way for women in the music business to make boss moves.
Rapper Tierra Whack presented Janelle Monae with the Trailblazer Award. The singer and actress told the crowd, “Being a trailblazer is about diving into spaces unseen and undiscovered. For me, that meant uncovering aspects of who I am in order to make spaces for others.” She then shared that being open about her sexuality on her acclaimed album Dirty Computer inspired a young female fan to do the same.
“She told me she had come out to her grandmother and her mother, because of the album,” said Janelle. “And I think moments like those, they remind you, no matter what’s going on in your life, how bad you’re feeling — that by us walking in our truths, it can sometimes give the next person courage to walk in theirs.”
Anderson.Paak, one of the few men to appear onstage Thursday night, presented SZA, who he toured with in the past, with the Rule Breaker Award. She told the crowd, “I guess when I was younger, I pictured a rule-breaker to be somebody who, like…has no fear, walking away from large explosions or whatever.”
As the crowd laughed, she added, “But as long as you end up here, this is the explosion, so it doesn’t matter how you feel on the way…I just want to thank everyone for having patience to watch someone grow.”
Patti LaBelle made a special appearance to present the Woman of the Year award to Ariana Grande, about whom she said, “I have shoes older than her — and taller than her — but she is a giant talent.”
A glamorous Alicia Keys was also on hand to announce a new initiative, She Is the Music. It’ll work to help women in the music biz discover and connect with one another, starting with the establishment of a database of every woman in the industry, including executives, songwriters, producers and engineers.
“If you’re a woman in music, you need to be a part of this,” Alicia told the crowd. “We can find each other, and we can hire each other.”

Michelle Williams’ fiancé Chad Johnson explains why he saved for 11 years for their engagement ring: “It was an act of faith”
Courtesy of OWNWhen Michelle Williams became engaged to Chad Johnson in April, one year after they met, he had been saving for the engagement ring for 11 years. Johnson had been putting money aside all those years, praying that he would finally meet the woman of his dreams.
“It was an act of faith for me,” Johnson tells ABC Radio. “I was like, you know what? I’m going to open up a ring account, and I’m going to believe every month that my wife is on her way.”
The pastor’s faith was rewarded, and now he’s looking forward to marrying the former Destiny’s Child singer. Williams, 38 and Johnson, 41, are staying true to their Christian faith, and will wait until their wedding day to consummate their marriage.
“It’s really about making sure that the physical piece of our relationship didn’t kinda negate or usurp if you will, other very foundational things,” Johnson says.
Williams returned to Broadway last week as she joined the cast of the Tony Award winning musical, Once on This Island. She believes her role will have a very positive effect on her relationship with Chad.
“My character is the Goddess of Love,” she says. “I’m not perfect, but I try to really see everything through love as much as possible. Maybe this character will strengthen that. So it will be fun, and then prayerfully, if he acts right, we’ll be married, and so we can be married together here in New York.”
You can follow the couple as they prepare for marriage in their reality series, Chad Loves Michelle, which airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
