Jay Z, Questlove, Lady Gaga, others allegedly declined to be interviewed for 'Surviving R. Kelly'

The Lifetime docu-series Surviving R. Kelly premiered Thursday night and featured shocking accounts of the R&B crooner’s alleged illicit acts with underage women.
The breadth of the six part expose is carried by interviews with Kelly’s ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, culture critic Toure, members of the singer’s inner circle and his alleged “sex cult” victims. The short list of potential interviewees, however, included the likes of Jay Z, Questlove, Lady Gaga and more, executive producer Dream Hampton revealed to The Detroit Free Press.
“We asked Lady Gaga. We asked Erykah Badu. We asked Celine Dion. We asked JAY-Z. We asked Dave Chappelle,” Hampton told the newspaper, adding Mary J. Blige and Lil Kim were also tapped for the project. All declined to participate.
“I remember [Questlove] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this,’” Hampton claimed. “It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.”
Two entertainers, however, did agree to be interviewed: R&B singer Sparkle, who testified against Kelly in 2008, and John Legend. “That makes John Legend even more of a hero for me,” Hampton said.
As previously reported, Kelly has allegedly threatened to take legal action against Lifetime with a federal lawsuit if the program airs.

Report: Lifetime will continue to air “Surviving R. Kelly” despite threats of legal action

R. Kelly is allegedly pursuing legal action against Lifetime hours before the network airs its six-part expose Surviving R. Kelly, but Lifetime has no plan to pull the show.
TMZ reports that Lifetime will be moving forward with its broadcast plans starting tonight. TMZ quotes a rep for the network as saying that Lifetime has “always championed women’s stories.”
According to TMZ, the R&B crooner is threatening to file a federal lawsuit against the network if it doesn’t pull the plug on the three-night event, which examines examine how Kelly’s star power allegedly allowed him to brainwash, manipulate and abuse numerous women.
The documentary features interviews with people who were once affiliated with Kelly’s inner circle as well as women who were reportedly pulled into his alleged “sex cult.”
According to TMZ, Kelly’s lawyer Brian Nix claims the singer possesses recordings which prove that Lifetime knew “some of the girls are lying, but that the budget was too high to turn back now.”

Report: Diddy allegedly feels “betrayed” by Cassie for dating personal trainer he hired
David Becker/Getty Images via ABC
Cassie may have jump-started the new year with a new romance, but not without a word or two on the matter from her ex, Diddy.
According to a new report from TMZ, the rap mogul allegedly felt “betrayed” after the singer revealed she was dating personal trainer Alex Fine. Why? Because Diddy is the one who hired Fine to train his ex over the past year.
This piece of news has sparked a bevy of rumors that Cassie may have been unfaithful during the course of her 10-year relationship with Diddy.
Cassie’s camp claims she didn’t start dating Fine until after her split with the Bad Boy CEO, but according to TMZ, Diddy is supposedly convinced there’s some sort of overlap.
As previously reported, Cassie not-so-subtly announced her relationship with Fine with an Instagram photo of the two of them kissing.

Domestic charge against Redskins linebacker Reuben Foster dropped
Michael Zagaris/San Francisco 49ers/Getty Images(TAMPA, Fla.) — The domestic violence charge pending against Washington Redskins linebacker Reuben Foster has been dropped.
The State Attorney’s Office dropped the misdemeanor charge, which stemmed from an incident in Tampa, Fla., between Foster and his ex-girlfriend on the night of Nov. 24, according to a Hillsborough County filing. Prosecutors said evidence in the case was insufficient to follow through with the charge.
Foster was due to appear for his arraignment on Thursday before the charge was dropped.
Police in Tampa had said at the time of the incident that Foster and Elissa Ennis were involved in a verbal altercation when “Foster slapped her phone out of her hand, pushed her in the chest area, and slapped her with an open hand on the left side of her face.”
Ennis later told her story to ABC’s Good Morning America in December.
“We’re disappointed. The prosecutor’s choice is yet another slap in the face to Miss Ennis, just like the one Mr. Foster gave her in Tampa,” Ennis’ attorney, Adante Pointer, told ABC News Thursday. “Elissa Ennis was fully ready to participate and hold him accountable. This is not a situation where she recanted, nor that the prosecutor had new evidence that it didn’t happen.”
Foster and Ennis had previously been involved in another domestic incident in February 2018. In that case, a domestic abuse charge against Foster was also dropped after Ennis retracted her allegations that the football player had hit her.
Foster was sentenced to two years of probation due to a gun possession charge connected to the February incident.
As for the impact to Foster’s football career, Washington had already received criticism after picking up Foster three days after his arrest in Tampa, ESPN reports. He remains on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list.

Report: Slim Jxmmi allegedly involved in violent street brawl while in New Zealand
ABC/Randy Holmes
Rae Sremmurd front man Slim Jxmmi reportedly ran into a spot of trouble while abroad, TMZ reports.
The chart-topping duo is currently touring overseas in support of their Sr3mm album, but while in New Zealand, they allegedly became embroiled in a violent street brawl. According to initial reports, the group was spotted in downtown Auckland, and a scuffle ensued after a fan attempted to record a video of them without their permission.
In footage obtained by TMZ, Slim Jxmmi is seen on the ground, tussling with two people — one of whom appears to be a woman — as several others attempt to break up the fight. Witnesses reported the sound of a bottle breaking and one person was taken to the Auckland City Hospital with stab wounds.
Swae Lee is nowhere to be seen in the video, however, and Jxmmi seemed healthy enough to talk to police, despite having what looks like blood on his body.
The “T’d Up” rappers have yet to comment on the altercation.

Childish Gambino, Janelle Monae, Ella Mai & more to play Coachella Festival
Ethan Miller/WireImageChildish Gambino, Janelle Monae, Ella Mai, Wiz Khalifa and more are on the list of performers for this year’s Coachella festival, taking place the weekends of April 12-14 and 19-21 in Indio, California.
Gambino, aka Donald Glover, is one of the festival’s three headliners, which also include pop star Ariana Grande and alt-rockers Tame Impala.
Also taking the Coachella stages this year will be Solange, H.E.R. Anderson .Paak, Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T, Jaden Smith, Juice WRLD, YG and many others. The lineup so far includes 165 acts in all. You can check out the complete roster of performers at the Coachella website.
Childish Gambino is scheduled to perform both weekends of the festival, as are Grande and Tame Impala.
Last year’s big Coachella performer, of course, was Beyoncé, who earned rave reviews for a two-weekend set that also included a Destiny’s Child reunion and a duet with husband JAY-Z. Her powerhouse performance prompted the trending hashtag #Beychella. Her set was also the most-viewed Coachella performance ever on YouTube, and the most-viewed live music festival performance, period, on the platform.
There’s no word yet on whether this year’s Coachella will be live streamed for free, like the first weekend was last year.
Kanye West was rumored to be under consideration to headline Coachella this year, but TMZ reported just hours before the performers were revealed that negotiations had broken down over Kanye’s stage design demands. None of that’s confirmed.
Passes go on sale this Friday, January 4 at 11 AM PT via Coachella.com. As usual, there’ll be the usual variety of ticket options and price levels.

Aaliyah's mother Diane Haughton responds to 'Surviving R. Kelly' trailer: “Shame on all those involved in this project”
WireImage/Kevin Mazur
The Lifetime docu-series Surviving R. Kelly debuts tomorrow, and in the first episode, new details of the R&B crooner’s relationship with Aaliyah are revealed.
Upon the release of first episode’s trailer, however, the late singer’s mother, Diane Haughton, has issued a statement via Instagram in response to a testimonial from Kelly’s former backup singer, Jovante Cunningham, who claims she witnessed Aaliyah having a sexual tryst with Kelly while on tour.
“The woman and so-called back up singer in the forthcoming Surviving documentary that described seeing, meeting or ever breathing the same air as my daughter, Aaliyah, is lying and is a liar,” Haughton’s statement begins. “My husband and I were always on tour with her and at interviews and every place she went throughout her entire career. Whoever this woman is, I have never seen her before anywhere on planet Earth, until now.”
Haughton continues: “These lies and fabrications cannot be tolerated and allowed to be spewed from the forked tongue of saboteurs of Aaliyah’s legacy…. Shame on all those involved in this project who though it kosher to drag Aaliyah’s name into a situation that has nothing to do with her today.”
The upcoming Liftetime docu-series features an emotional testimony from Cunningham, who claims she witnessed Kelly engaging in a sexual act with the then-15-year-old Aaliyah on his tour bus. She described what she saw as “things that an adult should not be doing with a child.”
Surviving R. Kelly airs on Jan. 3, on Lifetime at 9/8C.

Report: Kanye West allegedly turns down Coachella performance due to failed negotiation over stage design
ABC/Randy HolmesKanye West may not be bringing his self-proclaimed genius to life at Coachella 2019 after all, TMZ reports.
On Wednesday, the outlet revealed that the negotiations between Ye’s team and the festival coordinators did not end in a mutual agreement. According to the report, the organizers’ of the annual music event were not able to meet the Kids See Ghosts rapper’s demands for his anticipated stage design. “These 40×60 stages are so archaic,” an alleged “source” told TMZ. “It’s the same type of stage on which Shakespeare’s works were performed hundreds of years ago.”
Kanye was one of several rumored headliners for the 2019 edition of the Indio-set festival. The short list of rumored acts included Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Childish Gambino. If Ye were to perform at this year’s Coachella, it would serve as a follow up to his monumental set at the festival in 2011.
A return to the annual music summit would also make quite a lot of sense for the seasoned producer, considering he spent the previous year rolling out a marathon of G.O.O.D. Music releases including Ye and Pusha T‘s Grammy-nominated DAYTONA.
