Kangol Kid from UTFO passes away from cancer

The hip hop world is mourning the passing of Kangol Kid — from the legendary group UTFO — who died Saturday.

His family said in a statement that Kangol died peacefully around 3 a.m. at a hospital in Manhasset, New York, after suffering from colon cancer, USA Today reports. He was 55 and was diagnosed with cancer in February.

Born Shaun Shiller Fequiere, Kangol Kid recorded the 1980s old-school classics “Roxanne, Roxanne” and “Ya Cold Wanna Be with Me” with UTFO. One of his signature Kangol hats is featured in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
