Common set to develop limited series on Zora Neal Hurston's story of last known survivor of slave trade

ABC/Fred WatkinsCommon has found another project to develop under his production deal at Lionsgate TV.

According to Deadline, the award-winning star is set to adapt the recently-discovered Zora Neale Hurston book, Barracoon: The Story of the Last ‘Black Cargo.’ Common’s Freedom Road production company and Lionsgate recently acquired the rights to develop the book into a limited series.

Hurston’s book follows 87-year-old Cudjo Lewis, born Oluale Kossola, who remembers being brought from West Africa to the United States in 1859.  Based on her interview with Lewis, Hurston’s manuscript for Barracoon was finished in 1931, but was not published until earlier this year.

This is Common’s second project under his Liongsate deal.
