Cynthia Erivo to star in 'The Rose' remake, Tiffany Haddish to produce-star in 'Throw It Back' musical, & more

Cynthia Erivo is set to produce and lead a Searchlight remake of the 1979 Bette Midler-starring film The Rose, Variety has learned.

Producing the project under her newly launched Edith’s Daughter banner, Erivo will star as a self-destructive female rock star who “struggles to deal with the constant pressures of her career and the demands of those who surround her.” According to Variety, Erivo’s take on the story puts “a contemporary lens on the high price of fame.” Centered on fame and addiction, the original film was loosely based on the life and career of Janis Joplin, who died at the age of 27 from a
