Chadwick Boseman earns a posthumous Oscar nomination for 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'

Sarah Morris/FilmMagicChadwick Boseman earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. 

The late actor is up against Riz Ahmed, who starred in Sound of Metal, Anthony Hopkins, from The Father, Gary Oldman in Mank, and The Mauritanian‘s Tahar Rahim.

Based on the award-winning play by August Wilson, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marked Boseman’s final onscreen role before his death last August following a private, years-long battle with colon cancer. 

In the George C. Wolfe-directed drama, set in Chicago in 1927, Boseman portrays Levee, a trumpeter with dreams of composing his own music and escaping the background of Ma Rainey’s band.
