Florida State has fired athletic director Michael Alford after nearly five years with the university, ending his tenure amid mounting concerns about the football program, athletics finances and the department’s approach to the rapidly changing college sports landscape.

University President Richard McCullough announced the decision Monday, with senior associate athletics director Bruce Warwick appointed interim athletic director while Florida State begins a national search for a permanent replacement.  McCullough said the university’s priority is maintaining championship-level opportunities for its athletes and staff. “Florida State is committed to maintaining the highest standards for our student-athletes and staff,” McCullough said. “We want all of them to be able to play for championships. This leadership change reflects that commitment.”

Alford became Florida State’s athletic director in January 2022 after previously serving as president and CEO of Seminole Boosters. His tenure began with considerable success, including a 13-0 football season and ACC championship in 2023, but the program subsequently fell to 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 in 2025. The Seminoles opened this season 1-1 after a 27-24 home loss to SMU last week, while coach Mike Norvell has gone 8-18 since the start of the 2024 season.

Alford also faced increasing scrutiny over Florida State’s handling of name, image and likeness spending, roster funding and the department’s financial obligations. The school reported $437 million in athletics-related debt for the 2025 fiscal year, while major facility projects added to the department’s financial pressures. The issues became a broader concern as Florida State attempted to keep pace with the escalating costs of competing for players and championships under the new college athletics model.

The leadership change comes just days before Florida State is scheduled to face No. 10 Alabama, placing additional attention on the future of the athletics department and Norvell’s position. Alford previously served as athletic director at Central Michigan from 2017-20 and as an associate athletic director at Oklahoma from 2012-17.
